Therapeutic support for adults affected by adoption in Buckingham & Online
Were you adopted?
Have you adopted?
Were you a birth parent whose child was adopted?
Have you ever wondered how this has shaped your life and your relationships?
We would like to introduce ourselves as two BACP accredited therapists, who are somatically trauma informed and are qualified in adoption support counselling.
Therapy aims to provide a safe space to be able to explore those unspoken feelings and fears, and to start to understand the legacy of adoption.
Generally society uses the concept of 'a happy ending' with an adoption, however this misses the complexities underlying the process for all parties, including a deep sense of loss, feeling like you don't fit in, guilt and low self-esteem. All of which can be openly explored in a supportive, non-judgemental and empathic environment, where the simple act of feeling heard can be profound.
Restrictions Lifted
Historically there have been restrictions to adult adoptees easily accessing counselling support due to legal constraints. However, since December 2023 there was a law change which has meant that this restriction is no longer in place. Adoptees, birth parents and adoptive parents who are aged over 18 in England now have the freedom to choose where to access therapy. For this particular community this is a significant and welcome change for those where the legacy of the adoption process can have a life long impact.
As therapists with several years experience between us, we were acutely aware of the restrictions this old law had on our capacity to provide good quality therapeutic support. This fuelled a passion to provide accessibility to specialised adoption therapy, incorporating a 3 phased trauma informed model. Therefore we both hold certificates in Adoption Support Counselling and Level 5 Diploma Somatic-Informed Trauma Therapy.
